Medical Consultation

Injectable contraceptives are a popular and effective form of birth control used by millions of women around the world. Administered through an injection, they provide long-term protection against pregnancy and offer a convenient alternative to daily pills or barrier methods.

What Are Injectable Contraceptives?

Injectable contraceptives are hormone-based medications delivered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. The most commonly used injectable is Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate), which contains **progestin**, a synthetic version of the natural hormone progesterone. It prevents pregnancy mainly by:

  1. Inhibiting ovulation (release of eggs from the ovaries)

  2. Thickening cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg

  3. Thinning the uterine lining, reducing the chance of implantation

How Are They Used?

The injection is typically given once every 12 weeks (3 months) by a healthcare provider. The shot is usually administered in the upper arm or buttocks. Consistency is important; if the next dose is delayed beyond 13 weeks, backup contraception (like condoms) may be necessary.

Advantages

  • Highly effective: Over 99% effective when used correctly.

  • Convenient: Requires only four shots per year.

  • Private and discreet: No visible method or daily routine required.

  • Reduces menstrual cramps and bleeding in many users.

Disadvantages

  • Irregular bleeding is common, especially in the first 6–12 months.

  • Delayed return to fertility after discontinuation (can take 9–10 months).

  • Potential side effects: weight gain, mood changes, headaches.

  • No protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Who Should Not Use It?

Injectable contraceptives may not be suitable for women with:

  • History of breast cancer

  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • Blood clotting disorders

  • Liver disease
